In Brief

The ActiveE is due to debut at the January 2010 Detroit auto show. It comprises two Lithium Ion battery packs – one sited under the car and one in the engine bay. The electric motor sits directly behind the rear axle which compromises some of the boot space but still offers 100 litres of boot capacity.
The battery pack positioning will mean a low centre of gravity with a 50/50 distribution of weight balance which should result in excellent handling characteristics. The model is based on the 1 Series Coupe with near identical interior space but electric oriented instrumentation.
With the BMW Mini-E already in the field for trials this vehicle will add to the BMW fleet and provide feedback for future development of the Project i Megacity Vehicle.
Although weighing 400 kilos more than the 1 Series ActiveE has an acceleration of 0 -100kmh in under nine seconds and a governed top speed of 145 kph. The regenerative braking system should enable the driver to reclaim up to 20% of kinetic energy further extending the range.
The charge time from a european socket is just 3 hours and a smartphone application can keep you informed on the charge condition.
