In Brief
Smith Electric (parent company the Tanfield Group UK) has been around since the 1920's building electric vehicles. Smith teamed up with Ford to produce an electric Ford Transit Connect but the two companies parted company in October 2009 to pursue different segments of the market. Smith are concentrating on medium duty commercial trucks while Ford will be pursuing the electric Transit Connect to be followed in 2011 by an electric Focus passenger vehicle.
The Smith commercial range offers payload capabilities from 3tons to 12tons. The Edison (based on the Ford Transit chassis) can be configured for many commercial applications from refrigerated vans to panel vans. The top speed for the Edison is 80kms and it has a range of 160kms - ideal as an inner city delivery vehicle. Its acceleration from 0 - 50kms outperforms diesel adding to its attractiveness as an inner city vehicle.
The Newton Truck can handle payloads up to 12 tonnes. The Newton chassis can be configured for many commercial applications. Top speed is again 80kms with a range of 240kms on a single charge. Again the acceleration from 0 - 50kms outperforms diesel making it an ideal city transporter. Newton has facilities in North America and has recently signed up distributors for the Hong Kong and Macau markets.
Smith's range of clients include international customers such as DHL, TNT and Sainsbury’s. The tax benefits, low operating costs and environmental outcomes are the reasons why Smith is experiencing unprecedented global interest in their fleet range. Click here for the Smith website.
